Is a New Raspberry Pi Coming on Pi Day?

There is some speculation that a new Raspberry Pi product might be coming on Pi day 2022 (March 14). Founder Eben Upton, mentioned in an interview last October that no product was going to be announced for their 10 year anniversary, which happened just a couple of weeks ago on February 28th, and that a Raspberry Pi 5 wouldn’t be ready for release.

So, I would be very surprised to see a Pi 5 released this coming Monday, but hey, I hope I get surprised. Eben, and other Raspberry Pi employees, have mentioned they are making as many Pi 4’s as they can but supply just gets swallowed up as soon as they hit the market. Adding a Pi 5 to the mix sounds like a daunting task amid a global chip shortage and supply chain bottlenecks.

But, recent firmware releases mentioned a new model of CM4, labeled CM4S, indicating that this product is about to hit the market. As to what the “S” means, your guess is as good as mine. Leave a comment if you have a guess as to what the “S” stands for.

See the evidence for yourself. Look for CM4S in the list of firmwares available.

There were some mentions in the Raspberry Pi forum that the CM4S could be a CM4 with a CM3 form factor. But the firmware gives no indication of the form factor. Keep your eyes peeled and let’s see what Raspberry Pi will be baking into the new CM4S.

Eben has been hyping up the Pico and the RP2040 chip lately, so don’t be surprised if you see some Pico-related products announced on Pi day. In a recent video with Tom’s Hardware, Eben mentioned Raspberry Pi has been working on Pico accessories.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I can’t wait for Monday to come.
